  • Chambery - A disabled 62-year-old threw himself from his wheelchair and crawled to safety after it got stuck on a railway line as a train hurtled towards it, said rescue services on Sunday.

The incident at a level crossing in the French Alps came just days after seven schoolchildren were killed when their bus was hit by a train as it tried to cross a level crossing in the same region of France.

Sahli Messikh was trying to cross the railway in the town of Chambery when a wheel of his chair got stuck on the track. He threw himself to the ground and crawled away to avoid the train, which crushed the chair.

Messikh was given a medical checkup after the incident, but had no injuries and was sent back to his home just a few metres from the scene of the incident, said rescue services.
