Jerusalem - An Israeli official says a policeman has committed suicide at an airport farewell ceremony for French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The shooting at Israel's Ben-Gurion airport set off a panic at the ceremony.

Sarkozy's wife, Carla Bruni, ran up the stairs into their airplane, and security guards surrounded the French leader and whisked him aboard as well.

Police spokesperson Shlomi Sagi says the policeman was killed in an apparent suicide.

Police are denying reports that there was an assassination attempt on Sarkozy.
