24/07/2008 16:33 - (SA)
Rome - A Dutch father and his three sons fell to their deaths on Thursday whilst climbing an Alpine peak at the border between France, Italy and Switzerland, Italian police said.
"A father and his three sons, of Dutch nationality, fell to their deaths as they were climbing down Mount Dolent with ropes," a Courmayeur police official told AFP.
"The mother, who was with them, did not fall because she was coming down the mountain by herself using another route. She saw the drama unfold and sounded the alarm."
"She has been taken to hospital in Aoste, in a state of shock," the spokesperson added.
Mountain rescue workers from northern Italy have begun recovering the bodies. There was as yet no explanation as to what caused the accident.
