Berlin - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is to resign as leader of his Social Democratic Party on Friday after a barrage of criticism about his government's reform drive, ZDF public television reported.

Schroeder was due to speak at a hastily arranged news conference at 01:30 alongside Franz Muentefering, head of the SPD's parliamentary group who is set to take over the leadership, according to ZDF.

There was no suggestion that Schroeder would resign as chancellor, a post he has held since 1998.
