  • Jakarta - Pope Benedict's comments about Islam could hurt global religious harmony, government and religious leaders in the world's most populous Muslim countries said on Friday.

A growing chorus of Muslim leaders have called on the Pope to apologise for the remarks he made in a speech in Germany on Tuesday when he used the terms "jihad" and "holy war".

Pakistan's national assembly, parliament's lower house, unanimously passed a resolution condemning the Pope's comments.

"This statement has hurt sentiments of the Muslims," the resolution said.

    'Retract remarks'

"This is also against the charter of the United Nations. This house demands the Pope retract his remarks in the interest of harmony among different religions of the world."

Pakistan is the world's second most populous Muslim nation after Indonesia.

Islamic scholars say the Pontiff's comments show how little he understands Islam and some have said Islamic countries should threaten to break off relations with the Vatican.

The Vatican issued a statement to say the Pope had never meant to offend Islam.

    Criticism of the Prophet Mohammad

In his speech at the University of Regensburg, Benedict quoted criticism of Islam and the Prophet Mohammad by 14th century Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus, who wrote that everything Mohammad brought was evil and inhuman, "such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached".

Benedict repeatedly quoted Manuel's argument that spreading the faith through violence is unreasonable, adding: "Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul."

    The reaction was swift.

    Statements could hurt relations

"It is obvious from the statements that the Pope doesn't have a correct understanding of Islam," said Din Syamsuddin, chairman of Muhammadiyah, the second largest Islamic organisation in Indonesia.

Syamsuddin told Reuters the remarks could hurt "harmonious" relations between Muslims and Catholics and urged Muslims against reacting excessively.

"Whether the Pope apologises or not, the Islamic community should show that Islam is a religion of compassion," he said.

    Pope 'misunderstood Islam'

Fauzan Al-Anshori, spokesperson for the radical Indonesian Mujahideen Council, said the Pope misunderstood Islam and jihad (Islamic holy war or struggle) and challenged him to a dialogue.

"Muslims can't eliminate jihad from the Islamic discourse, the same way Christians can't do away with the doctrine of Trinity," he said.

The Vatican press office said the Pope had not intended to carry out an in-depth study of jihad and Muslim thinking about it, "even less to offend the sensitivity of the Muslim faithful".

      POPE'S REMARK
    15/09/2006 12:33
I AM BELIEVER IN JESUS CHRIST. I DO NOT NECCESSARILY SUPPORT THE POPE AT ALL, OR HIS COMMENTS FOR THAT MATTER, BUT LET IT BE KNOWN THAT THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST AND CHRISTIANITY IS CONSTANTLY MALIGNED AND BLASPHEMED, BOTH IN THE MEDIA AND EVERYDAY SPEACH. I BELIEVE THAT THOSE OF ISLAMIC FAITH RAISE AN ISSUE FAR TO QUICKLY WITH REGARDS TO ANY SO-CALLED OFFENCE. JESUS WAS BEATEN, MOCKED AND SPAT UPON, YET HE NEVER DEFENDED HIMSELF. WE DO NOT NEED TO MAKE A FUSS OVER EVERY OFFENCE. - MARK IVEY

In response to Mark Ivey's comment... Us Muslims take our religon seriously. Any comment that disregrds it or disrespects it upsets us. I'm sorry to hear that you as a Christian don't take offence everytime something negative is said about your religon. We Muslims on the other hand do. Just wish that those who don't understand Islam completely refrain from making illogical comments. - safyia

      More muslim stupidity...
    15/09/2006 13:21
Islamists react to the suggestion that Islam is violent with fury and soon violence. Much like Islamists reacted to cartoons suggesting that Islam is violent (how many deaths and how much carnage came out of that?!) Is the irony lost on them? Such a combination of stupidity and violence is a threat to modern civilisation - when will people learn that Islam is a serious problem? When will South Africa politicians stop coddling up to Islamists? - IGNACIO SMITH

      Pope's comment
    15/09/2006 13:28
I do not think that the Holy Father said anything wrong. He is right- God does not want people to use violence to enforce the spread of any particular religion. There are examples of violence in the name of religion in all religions, eg Crusades and Jihad. But what we must remember is that there would have not been any crusades, had there not been jihad. God is a God of love. 'Holy War' is an oxymoron. Violence by adherents of any religion is wrong and should not be condoned. - Rob Orr

      hypocrisy
    15/09/2006 13:29
Mark states, quite loudly and vigorously, that "we do not need to make a fuss over every offence" yet he laments the fact that the name of some man and the religion founded after him is constantly maligned. I think he doth protesteth over much. I guess this just goes to show that all religions are the same: insecure and jealous of their "beliefs" yet espouse "understanding" of other "heathens". Pah! humbug - frank cobain

      Truth hurts
    15/09/2006 13:43
There are many mosques in Christendom. Where are the Cathederals in the heart of Islam? Is missionary and evangelism allowed in "Islamic" states? What is the Islamic double standard on religious freedom? Jesus is the way truth and light. Only through him (and no one else) will a person receive eternal life. - Alan

      Tolerance
    15/09/2006 13:43
If both groups believe in a loving God, who is merciful, gracious and compassionate, why is there no meeting of minds on this? For both sides, and particularly the Muslim, does your God really need you to defend him? Do Jesus and Muhamad need protection? If someone blasphemes either of them, isn't that person just calling for damnation upon himself? Why do we need to do the work of God for him? This world is full of hatred and bloodshed because we refuse to compromise and accept each other. - Jonas Bukutu

      Pope's Remark
    15/09/2006 13:49
From what I can understand the founder of Islam, Muhammad was a peaceful man who would turn the other cheek. What happened to his followers? - Phillip

Can only agree with Ivey and Smith
    15/09/2006 13:58
Safyia, here is a novel concept: how about SHOWING that Islam is a religion of tolerance and peace by ignoring illogical/disrespectful/ignorant comments instead of reacting with fury and violence? Kinda like tunring the other cheek. Oh, I guess, you don't believe in the concept. Please don't issue a fatwa for my death for suggesting that Muslims should calm down. - Charles Ncguka

      Muhammad peacefull?
    15/09/2006 14:21
No dude, Muhammad was first and foremost a military leader who used a religion to bind his followers to him. Nothing has changed except maybe the scope of the problem. Now we have a billion Muslims who are very easliy whipped into a frenzy over "insults" both real and percieved. How proud he would have been of them! With a force of this size he could easily have taken over the world, which is no doubt what they would love to achieve. - Warloc

      pope knows
    15/09/2006 15:14
If the pope is spreading a lie, he should be corrected. As Muslims we are not angry with people who disagree with us. We are required to keep the record straight though. If a man imposed his religion with a sword, that would not be Islam and the pope should know that by now. There are millions of Muslims in every country who could give him an example - pope knows

      Islam in the Lime Light
    15/09/2006 15:18
Islam teaches you not to judge anyone. All I ask is that non-muslims research the terms of Fatwah, Jihad, Mujahideen for their real meanings, instead of listening to Western Media. There is a huge misconception about Muslims due to media-related incidents. I ask that those of you out there please read both sides of the story before making up your mind. It's all matter of understanding and respect. - Moosa
