3-minute silent memorial
01/01/2005 10:19 - (SA)
London - Britain will hold a three-minute silence at noon on Wednesday in remembrance of the thousands of people killed by the earthquake and resulting tsunamis in Asia, Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said.
"This is to commemorate the victims of the catastrophe in southeast Asia and in solidarity with the people of the affected countries," Jowell said, adding that the suggestion to hold the silence came from the EU presidency.
"On the same day, flags on government buildings will be flown at half-mast," Jowell said.
"The government hopes that employers will do all they can to ensure that employees are able to observe the silence and pay their respects at that time," she added.
At least 34 British nationals perished in the disaster and another 50 are thought to be missing.
Last week's tsunamis left parts of several Asian countries in a state of devastation with millions facing starvation and a death toll in excess of 125 000.
