British cops probe hoax e-mails
02/01/2005 09:59 - (SA)
London - British police were investigating on Saturday hoax emails sent to friends and relatives of victims of the Asian tsunamis purportedly from government officials and saying their loved ones were dead.
"The Metropolitan police service would like to reassure the public that these messages are hoaxes," said a police spokesperson, referring to e-mails sent to people who had placed appeals for information on the Sky News website.
"The British government would not use e-mail to convey news of the death of a loved one," the spokesperson said. "Police are treating this as a very serious crime, and a full investigation has been launched."
The hoax e-mails have all been sent from the same bogus e-mail address.
The notes claim to come from the "foreign office bureau" in Thailand and state that the missing person has been confirmed dead.
Police advised anyone receiving such an e-mail to treat it with the "utmost caution".
