Wave of bogus charities
08/01/2005 09:17 - (SA)
London - British police warned on Friday that bogus charities are trying to cash in on the tsunami disaster and urged the public to be vigilant when making donations.
London's Metropolitan Police said fraudsters were sending e-mails asking for money to be placed in banks overseas. Scotland Yard police headquarters said it was also investigating a number of websites purportedly set up by charities in the wake of the disaster.
"We do not in any way wish to dissuade members of the public from donating money to the registered charity tsunami appeals," the force said in a statement. "But we urge them to exercise vigilance in order to prevent and disrupt these and other possible criminal scams."
