Washington - In a show of confidence as early election results streamed in, President George W Bush said late on Tuesday he was "very upbeat" and confident of defeating his Democratic rival, John Kerry.
"I believe I will win, thank you very much. I feel good about it," said Bush, who had shed the tense and tired look he had after casting his ballot in his adoptive home state of Texas early in the day.
The president seemed at ease as he welcomed reporters to the West Sitting Hall on the second floor of the White House for brief remarks as he watched returns with family members, including his twin daughters and his parents.
Asked how he was feeling, Bush straightened in his armchair and replied: "Very upbeat, thank you.
"I'm glad to be able to watch the returns here with my family and friends. "And it's going to be an exciting evening," Bush said, before quipping: "Why don't you all take the rest of the evening off?"
Twin daughters Jenna and Barbara were on one couch, beaming, while Bush's mother Barbara, and his father, former president George Bush, shared a nearby couch and Bush's dog Barney strolled around the ornate sitting room.
