Washington - Barack Obama pressed his attack on rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on the heels of three big primary wins that made him the Democratic front-runner, saying on Wednesday that she and presumptive Republican nominee John McCain are in part responsible for America's economic woes.

Clinton focused on contests next month as she searched for ways to revitalise her faltering candidacy and halt Obama's newfound momentum after eight consecutive wins, including Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC on Tuesday.

The former first lady was considered the Democratic favourite just a few weeks ago, but Obama has cut into her support among women and the working class.

Now, she is shaking up her staff and turning her attention to must-win March 4 races in Texas and Ohio, having largely conceded the remaining races in February to Obama.

Obama is counting on wins in Wisconsin and his birthplace, Hawaii, next week.

Targeting McCain

Obama has been increasingly targeting McCain looking ahead to the November election. On Wednesday, he took his major rivals on directly, painting them as Washington insiders whose votes on the Iraq war have had stark economic consequences.

"It's a Washington where politicians like John McCain and Hillary Clinton voted for a war in Iraq that should've never been authorised and never been waged - a war that is costing us thousands of precious lives and billions of dollars a week" that could be used on infrastructure, job training and health care, Obama said at a campaign stop at a General Motors plant in Wisconsin.

Polls show Americans worry the country is already in a recession, thumped by falling housing prices and a serious credit crisis.

On the Republican side, McCain took another step toward locking up his party's nomination by winning all three contests, despite lukewarm support from the party's conservative base. The victories helped the Arizona senator save face after embarrassing losses to rival Mike Huckabee over the weekend.
