Obama on 'low-key vacation'

  • Charlotte Amalie - Senator Barack Obama is spending some down time in the US Virgin Islands, hanging out at the beach and enjoying a relaxed island atmosphere.

The Obama family was greeted at the airport on Sunday by Governor John deJongh and his family before beginning a "low-key vacation" in the US territory, government spokesperson Jean Greaux said on Monday.

"The general feeling is we're quite fortunate that Senator Obama views the territory as a place where he can take in some rest and relaxation," Greaux said.

Tourists spotted Democratic presidential hopeful relaxing on the beach on Sunday at a resort hotel in St Thomas, the most populated of the three-island chain.

On Monday, the hotel's general manager escorted a photojournalist from the premises, saying he wanted to make sure his guests could relax.

Obama is keeping such a low profile that his presidential campaign would not say where he is staying - and even refused earlier on Monday to confirm he was in the US Virgin Islands.

The Illinois senator is popular in the US Virgin Islands, which in February gave him three delegates in the race for the Democratic nomination. Rival Hillary Rodham Clinton did not win a delegate at the caucuses. Six super delegates will go to the August national convention; four have backed Clinton and two have endorsed Obama.
