McCain seeking running mate
03/04/2008 09:08 - (SA)
Annapolis, Maryland - Republican presidential candidate John McCain admitted on Wednesday his choice of a vice presidential running mate would be especially crucial, given his age.
The 71-year-old senator, who would be the oldest president ever inaugurated for a first term, said he was beginning to the process of selecting a vice-presidential nominee.
"I'd like to get it done as early as possible, I am aware of the enhanced importance of this issue given my age," McCain said with a chuckle, on the Don Imus radio programme on New York's WABC.
"We just started this process, getting together a list of names, and having them looked at," said McCain.
The office of the vice-president is seen as relatively without influence, but it has an important function, as the incumbent succeeds to the top job if a president dies, resigns or is removed from office by impeachment.
Under an amendment to the constitution in 1967, the vice-president can also take over if the president becomes disabled.
