Washington - US President George W Bush offered his congratulations to Barack Obama for securing the Democratic presidential nomination, White House spokesperson Dana Perino said on Wednesday.

"President Bush congratulates Senator Obama for clinching the Democratic party's 2008 nomination for president," Perino told reporters.

"He knows from personal experience that the presidential nominating process is a gruelling one and Senator Obama came a long way in becoming his party's nominee."

Perino said Bush did not personally call to offer his congratulations.
