Dog poisoning in West Rand
06/12/2002 13:39 - (SA)
Various reports of dog poisoning were received by the local Police and the Police in the West Rand.
Insp Yolande Bouwer, spokesperson for the SAPS West Rand says at this stage the community merely reports that dogs are being poisoned but no cases are being opened.
She says it can therefore not always be verified whether the dogs which were poisoned are connected to criminal cases or not.
"In most incidents of dog poisoning no autopsies were conducted," she says.
All Police stations on the West Rand are aware of the imposing threat and members of the public are urged to open a case of poisoning or animal cruelty at the Police for a proper investigation, says Bouwer.
A security guard from Carletonville was arrested in October in connection with dog poisoning.
Veterinary surgeons as well as the SPCA in all the relevant areas will be notified to report these cases to the Police.
Anybody with information on the poisoning of dogs can phone Supt John van der Merwe at 083-556-7559 or Insp Zelda Thoms at (011) 951-1409.
More news in the Carletonville Herald of December 6.
