Shots fly in robbery
21/10/2004 12:20 - (SA)
A SHOOTOUT ensued in Lower Crossroads on Monday when police arrived on the scene of an armed robbery near the Cash & Carry wholesalers in Lansdowne Road.
According to the SAPS, a cash-in-transit security vehicle was coming out of the wholesalers at around 10:15 wholesaler when a white Ford Courier bakkie, with one occupant, drove into it and forced it to stop.
About ten armed men came from the direction of nearby houses on foot and started shooting at the security vehicle. At the same time shots were also fired from a green VW Jetta with one occupant that drove up to the security vehicle.
Police in the area heard the shots and rushed to intervene. On their arrival there was an exchange of fire between the police and the robbers.
The driver of the Jetta drove off in the direction of Khayelitsha and the other robbers fled on foot, with one cash box, between the houses and surrounding bushes. It was later established that the cash box was empty. Nobody was injured.
Police established that the Ford bakkie that was left at the scene was hijacked earlier this month in Harare, Khayelitsha.
A case of armed robbery is being investigated and anyone with information is asked to contact the serious and violent crimes investigation unit at 021 935 9600, or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
