Cape Town - The Cape Town Carnival starts on March 18 with a fashion show and goes on until March 20. Isabel Meyer, CEO of the Cape Town Carnival spoke to News24 about the upcoming event.
News24: What is the reason behind Cape Town Carnival?
Isabel Meyer: Building community & stimulating development
1. Utilising cultural expressions to enhance:
- social cohesion and
- community esteem
2. Creating positive inputs into the local economy (tourism and the extension of the tourist season, trade, design, & arts).

Isabel Meyer: This is the FIRST year - the inaugural Carnival

News24: Your website states "the most influential South African designers paired with celebrity models" will be part of the carnival parade? Can you drop some names?

News24: How long does it take to put such an event together? Have there been any hiccups when it came to planning the carnival?
Isabel Meyer: 22 months ago started on this. We had to develop the model, engage community groupings, creative process, creative execution, learned a few lessons along the way.
Recession and 2010 Hype did affect our sponsorship funding, we scaled down the parade to just over 2000 people and combined the groups
News24: What are your expectations for this year's events?
Isabel Meyer: It is going to be beautiful. Six new truly Capetonian songs - a blend of all that is Cape Town, more than 2 000 people in costume, singing, dancing and performing together, a massive 14 X 3.5 X4 float, large costumes (4X2m), props etc. etc.
