They dress to the nines, strut their stuff and everything is five-star except perhaps the occasional fake French accent.

Welcome to the Vodacom Durban July where the rich and famous come out in droves to show off their latest bling and shagmates. What do they know about horses and racing? Well, that’s a subject for another day.

Roll over VDJ, the rural Dundee July wants a piece of the action too. Who needs to snack on Norwegian salmon and sip champagne when the local deli makes delicious samoosas and SA Breweries beverages are just as good?

The town is small so it’s safe to bring your regular partner because the dominee might spot you and it’s bound to end up badly. Forget the high-end couture that designers sell to aspirational Durbanites; your local seamstress knows your pocket pretty well. The cherry on top for jockeys here is that the race is not about winning; it’s horses’ turn to strut their stuff.

Hold your horses, says Nkandla. Dundee doesn’t have the sole bragging rights for a rural horse racing event.

South Africa’s most famous rural town now has its own race called the Nkandla May. This race is still a pony, but like anything in Nkandla, it is sure going to be on everyone’s lips.
