Described by the Basic Education Department as “dysfunctional”, the Kopanang Secondary School near eMalahleni (formerly Witbank) in 2011 had a Matric pass rate of a tragic 13%. Pupils at the school hailed from an impoverish community and as a result faced enormous challenged.

Anglo American staff from the Khwezela Colliery stepped in with various programmes to help lift the school from its dire state, giving their time to both pupils and teachers through training, mentorship programmes, revision camps, life skills training and supplementary classes on technical subjects.

Management and teaching staff at the school were helped with management skills training, and Anglo American also made improvements to the physical infrastructure of the school.

Annual three-week intensive study camps for the pupils are run in advance of matric exams every year, where the children are all provided with food and somewhere safe and warm to sleep.

The intervention of Anglo American and its staff had by 2015 raised the Matric Pass rate at Kopanang to 95%, with a string of pupils having done well enough to get to university. The opportunities related to this intervention have therefore been truly life-changing for one of South Africa’s most challenged communities.
