DANCE UP A STORM: Hout Bay Resident Mandisa Qwesha (22), a student with La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre, has been invited to perform as a flamenco singer with a new flamenco youth ensemble in August in Port Elizabeth. La Rosa was established in 1990 in Cape Town under the artistic direction of Carolyn Holden, also known as "Carolina Rosa". Mandisa's gift for performing showed itself at the tender age of four, when she would sing at various community functions in Hout Bay. She later began taking dance and drama lessons offered by the Jikeleza Dance Project under the direction of choreographer and ex-professional dancer Edmund Thwaites. After watching a La Rosa studio performance, Mandisa's joined La Rosa's Young Adult Training and Job Creation Programme in 2006, where she is in her third and final year. Mandisa also currently teaches weekly flamenco classes at Jikeleza in Hout Bay. Photo: Supplied
