News24 joins Justin Bieber on Google’s Zeitgeist

2010-12-13 12:44
Justin Bieber, News24 and Die Antwoord were among the fastest rising search terms in South Africa in 2010, according to Google’s annual 'Zeitgeist' report.

The Zeitgeist report is a series of ranked lists compiled from accumulated Google searches in order of their popularity.

Jannie Momberg, News24 Editor says, “The digital take up in South Africa, including online and on mobile devices, is growing exponentially. The inclusion of News24 with these other popular culture search terms show we are succeeding in making our product a part of the daily conversation of thousands of South Africans.

“The generic search term “news” features on both the “Most Popular” and “Top Mobile Searches” which positions News24 strongly as South Africa’s largest digital news platform“, Momberg said.

The top 10 fastest rising search terms in South Africa in 2010 were: justin bieber, nicki minaj, toptv, locnville, die antwoord, yahoo sign in, powerball results, news24.com south Africa, moshi monsters and afrihost.

Haiti topped the list in the local News category, with Julius Malema coming in second.

ChatRoulette, a Russian based site in which users are paired with strangers at random for online video or message conversations, claimed the top spot as Google's fastest rising global search of 2010. Apple's iPad came in a close second.
