News24 launches Elections 2009 website

2009-03-12 11:22
Cape Town - Informative, interactive and instantaneous. Those are the principles behind a website launched by the nation's leading digital news brand. Created by News24.com, South Africa's largest website with a monthly local readership of 1.4 million, as measure by Nielsen Market Intelligence (MI) during February 2009, the site - Elections 2009 - features up-to-the-minute news and citizens' views on the latest election headlines and issues.

"Elections 2009 quickly delivers relevant news and insights, as well as user-generated content such as Twitter tweets, blog posts and photos," says Jannie Momberg, editor of News24. "Beyond the website, News24 will deliver election news through email, SMS or Twitter tweets to those away from their computers."

With seamless integration of multimedia, including TV campaign ads, interview footage and user-generated videos, the site offers a comprehensive look at the latest happening from all the major South African political parties and personalities.

Election tweets and consolidated coverage

Complementing regular commentary and opinion pieces from a variety of News24 columnists, other media and MyNews24 users, Elections 2009 will also feature its own Twitter feed and consolidated tweets about the election site for up-to-the-second news and views from around the country.

The site will also feature exclusive blog feeds from the eight biggest political parties, including:

  • African Christian Democratic Party
  • African National Congress
  • Congress of the People
  • Democratic Alliance
  • Freedom Front Plus
  • Independent Democrats
  • Inkatha Freedom Party
  • United Democratic Movement

    Citizen-driven election reporting

"While News24 is known for breaking news, we're also mobilising MyNews24 users to be our eyes and ears on the ground," adds Momberg. "Whether at political rally or simply commenting on a new political advertisement, we're asking all digital citizens in South Africa to share their thoughts, observations and opinions with the millions of users on News24."

News24 users can e-mail or MMS photos or videos to photos@news24.com or send articles to photos@news24.com

    Interactive elections map

According to Momberg: "One unique element of the site is an interactive map with a variety of information about the election results from 1994, 1999 and 2004, including a province by province breakdown of each political parties' share of the votes from each election since 1994." On April 22, the site will feature this year's election results to contrast with those from previous years. "News24 readers will also be interested to know that the Elections 2009 site is a sneak peak of our fresh design to be launched later this year."
