    Bad driving
    Denoon Sieg, Noordhoek

MY compliments to "Backchat Nina" for a very topical column on the abysmal standard of local driving (The People's Post, 18 October).

She correctly targeted the taxis (most of them, anyway), but what I find uncanny is how often bad driving is exhibited by those in BMWs. I've devised some words to suit the acronym BMW but they're too rude for this family newspaper - I simply mutter them under my breath when a BMW does something irresponsible, dangerous, or just plain silly, as they so often do.

I guess most of the bad driving comes down to impatience, attitude (usually arrogance), and lack of consideration for other road users. It never fails to intrigue me that a driver will risk a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre to get a car or two ahead, and then end up at the next traffic light at the same time as me... or will not take into account traffic ahead that simply cannot be passed.

Having recently returned from an eight-week stay in Australia, where I drove daily, mostly on six-lane main roads in Sydney's northern suburbs, the difference in driving standards here is glaringly evident. Australian drivers are disciplined and generally considerate - but traffic control there is very efficient and effective, and penalties for breaking the rules are harsh and firmly imposed.
