GOT an occasion coming up or just wondering where to have a good meal?
The People's Post hopes to make the choice easier for you by running restaurant reviews by a local food connoisseur who enjoys living it up at posh eateries just as much as he likes getting down and dirty at a steakhouse. In the first review, Grant Kipling writes of his experience at The Cattle Baron in Tokai.
THERE were seven of us that evening. Unfortunately Mo had to stay at home as her new teeth had broken and the super-glue she used to fix them had stuck her jaws together.
At least she was quiet for a while.
We were shown to our table immediately and were very comfortable despite being a rather large party.
Our drinks order was taken and menus provided by our waitress, Erica.
There is nothing worse than being seated and left to your own devices until a waitron works up the courage to speak to you. Not the case here.
The menu is vast and caters for all ages and tastes.
There are seafood and meat combos, steaks, chicken and vegetarian choices.
At first glance, the prices seem on the high side, but try to look past that to start with.
Our drinks arrived promptly enough. Local beers came at R9, passion fruit and lemonade at R8 and mineral waters at R10. These seemed reasonable. No good buying good red wine when the chickie from the South just mixes it with Coke. Shame!
After a few drinks and surprisingly little violence at our table, we are ready to order.
Lentil-Head Leanne and her apprentice Jenna order Greek salads (R30).
Marinda wanted the pasta Alfredo (R42), while the kids had kiddies' burgers (R24).
Vince and I decided to be cavemen and go for 400 g Barons rump steaks. These come with a sauce for R85.
Our food arrived in good time and all looked fabulous. The kids' food was, to say the least, generous.
The pasta was creamy and well presented and the salads fresh.
Our steaks were excellent - tender and full of flavour. They got those spot-on.
A side order of creamed spinach and pumpkin was also provided at no cost. A nice touch, I thought.
The food was destroyed faster than our deputy president can say "Fly me to Saudi Arabia"! It was a thumbs-up all around.
Desert for the kids came in the form of ice cream and a large selection of sauces for R16. I can recommend this to any person of any age, and it is very good value.
Dom Pedro's (R19) arrived with tea (R7). Always a nice end to a meal.
The bill, including drinks but before gratuity, came to R568, which for seven was very reasonable, considering the quality of the food and the service we received.
