    On the road to stardom
    Nina Harvey

When Chad Saaiman, a 23-year-old singer from Crawford, first experienced the exhilaration of performing in front of a crowd, he knew that this was the road he was meant to travel.

Since that first moment on stage in front of his entire school on Valentines Day, Chad hasn't looked back and it seems that people are starting to sit up and take notice of this star on the horizon.

Chad continued to perform at school and local churches until 2002 when he saw an opportunity arise to participate in the first South African Idols competition.

After standing in line with thousands of other hopefuls, all waiting their chance to shine, Chad auditioned and clearly the judges saw potential as he went on to make it into the top 50.

"The whole experience put me in the limelight? says Chad. "This not only opened doors for me but also opened my eyes to the fact that I had it in me to do this as a profession."

These days Chad has a regular time-slot on a Thursday and Saturday evening at Cafe Manhattan in Green Point, where he entertains alongside three other singers.

He is also currently working on recording his first album. "At the moment I am working with three producers and laying down as many tracks as possible," says Chad, "and eventually we will decide which tracks to use on the album."

Chad says it is difficult to define his style of music under one particular genre. "A lot of it can be described as soul music," he says, "but there are so many other elements in it as well."

This range of musical interest and talent is evident in Chad's first song release, Invitation, which has a distinctly reggae feel to it.

Invitation has become a hit among locals and is currently number seven on the SA Top 10 on Heart 104.9 Fm. "It is difficult to describe the way I felt the first time I heard my song on the radio," says Chad. "It was a regular Saturday afternoon at home and the next thing I know my whole family is phoning to tell me turn on the radio. It was the kind of thing you dream about and can't believe when it happens."

Chad says that his family are a great support and help keep him humble, which is something he considers to be very important.

"I am just an ordinary guy in extraordinary circumstances." Chad hopes to release his album early next year, but in the mean time you can catch him live at Cafe Manhattan at 74 Waterkant Street, Green Point. Phone Cafe Manhattan on 421-6666 for more information.
