Take a big bite out of crime

SET aside Sunday, 20 May as your contribution and mark of commitment to peace and unity for all in South Africa.

People's Post, Pick 'n Pay and the Table of Peace and Unity are calling on readers to host their own Table of Peace and Unity at their home, place of work or community hall or church, on Sunday, 20 May.

A prize Pick 'n Pay shopping vouchers to the value of R2 500 can be won by a People's Post reader who takes up the call to host their own Table of Peace and Unity.

The Table of Peace and Unity, held as part of the Cape Town Gourmet Festival, is a concept that has captured the hearts of many South Africans for the past seven years.

The Table of Unity takes the form of a massive, simultaneous sit-down feast that will take place at noon on Sunday, 20 May in three key venues across the country: in Cape Town on the slopes of Table Mountain; at the historic Union Buildings in our capital city, Pretoria; and in the Botanical Gardens in the city of Durban.

This annual, national celebration sees religious leaders, politicians, celebrities and South Africans from all walks of life, seated simultaneously in three cities, around a 300 metre long table, with one long loaf of olive bread down the centre, breaking bread together in prayer for a peaceful and united future for all.

This year the "food and fun" aspect of the event is offset by a more serious component - the fight against crime. The Gourmet Festival has joined hands with the Unite Against Crime campaign to encourage individuals throughout South Africa to take action.

? Post or e-mail us a picture and an inspiring story of how successful your Table of Peace and Unity at home was. And also send along your positive solution to reducing crime, and you could be the winner of those shopping vouchers worth R2 500. Send stories and photos, together with your contact details, to People's Post / Table of Peace and Unity Competition, PO Box 30261, Tokai, 7966 or e-mail these through to post@peoplespost.co.za.

The closing date for the competition is Wednesday, 23 May. The judges' decision is final and the prize is not transferable to cash (the vouchers can be redeemed at any Pick 'n Pay or Shoprite Checkers store).

The winner will be contacted telephonically.

The winner will be required to be photographed for People's Post.

    1. Invite family, friends, colleagues and neighbours to a memorable luncheon. Contribute funds to your favourite cause.

    2. Prepare a wonderful three-course meal (See Spekko Rice recipes on www.gourmetsa.com).

    3. Create one long table to seat everyone with a loaf of bread that runs along the centre. Take a special moment to break bread and share it with those at your table, as a sign of peace of unity.

    4. Take a photograph of your own Table of Peace and Unity, and post or email it to People's Post.
