    Challenge ahead for soccer 16
    Brian Gaffney

THE countdown to the 2008 Engen Knockout Challenge has started with the announcement of the 16 teams invited to take part in this major under-17 soccer contest on the weekend of 26 and 27 July at Mitchell's Plain.

Gilbert Kruger, the co-ordinator of the annual event, yesterday disclosed the line-up in contention for the R10 000 winners' cash prize at the annual event.

The list includes the Who's Who in youth soccer.

It reads: Ajax Cape Town, Santos, UWC Provincial Academy, Old Mutual Academy, LFA Mitchell?s Plain, Cape Town Milano, Ikapa Academy, Vasco da Gama, Baltic Rangers, Rygersdal, Young Romans, Riverside Rangers, Greenwood Athletic, LFA Cape District, Greater Phillipi and Avendale Athletico.

The Provincial Academy will defend their title in the face of strong challenges from Ajax, the champions in 2004 and 2006, as well as Santos who triumphed in 2005.

The Santos Professional Soccer Club and the LFA Mitchell's Plain will host the soccer showpiece at the Stephen Reagan Sports Complex in Westridge, Mitchell's Plain.

Kruger anticipates the fierce rivalry among the leading academy teams from Ajax, Santos, UWC Provincial Academy and Old Mutual will take the "championship to greater heights".

Greenwood Athletic, Young Romans, Riverside Rangers and Avendale Athletico have the potential to match the big guns at Westridge.

These clubs have regularly taken part in youth tournaments under the auspices of the Safa Cape Town in recent years.

? The Engen Knockout Challenge launch function will be held on Wednesday, 2 July at 19:00 at the Santos Soccer Academy in Lansdowne.
