LOCAL dance academy Out of Africa have found themselves in the spotlight a lot lately ? and with good reason.
In 2005 they took 17th, 18th and 19th place out of 150 groups at the Hip Hop World Championship in Germany, and walked away with top honours at the National Hip Hop Competition held at Grand West earlier this month.
Out of Africa Dance Academy holds classes at Star of the Sea School in St James for young aspiring dancers from various communities in and around the Southern Suburbs, and is currently training 10 students to become dance teachers and motivational speakers.
Since its inception in 2005, they have showcased some truly amazing talent and won numerous accolades, proving themselves to be strong competition both on a local and international level.
Founder member Ivy Meyer believes that part of the reason for the academy's success can be attributed to the fact that their choreography is ever-changing.
"We try to keep things as interesting and varied as possible," says Meyer.
"The competition is getting more and more challenging and in order to really stand out you need to come up with new fresh moves. Though I am in control of the choreography the students also have a lot of ideas for new steps, so the whole process is a collaboration."
Clearly this is a winning recipe as was proven at the National Hip-hop clash where the dancers turned up the heat and exceeded all expectations by taking home the first place ranking in each category, including:
Best solo - Jason Meyer (Lakeside); best duo - Jason Meyer and Marcus Mabie (Goodwood); best group dance - Fusion; and best formation - Dance Dynamics.
But there is no time to relax and take it all in as the dancers prepare to leave for Sun City, then Los Angeles, USA, and finally Germany.
Clearly Ivy's motto "Dreams into Reality" is one that is not taken lightly but her students. These young talents are firmly on the road to success, dancing all the way.
