After 25 years of strumming his guitar and serenading the masses, Zambian born singer/songwriter Robin Auld is still going strong and sounding as good as ever.
Now, with his new show Only in it for the Money - A Songwriter's Tale, Robin takes audiences through the music, mayhem and magic that have featured in his life to date.
Born to Scottish parents in Zambia, Robin moved to Cape Town at the age of 10 and enrolled at school in Fish Hoek where he first began to play around with music.
"My mom always wanted to me to learn to play the piano, but it never quite took ? I was more interested in learning to play guitar," says Robin.
Listening to the likes of Neil Young and Jimi Hendrix, the young Robin learned the art of guitar, a talent which would begin his career in the music business.
"I started out just playing guitar alongside a number of singers, such as Steve Walsh for instance," says Robin, "and in fact it was only when Steve left to go overseas that I sang for an audience for the first time.
"I was basically almost out of work and after a show in Sea Point I decided to give it a go and test out something I had been working on, and it got a good response."
Robin continued to perform his own material at a number of local venues after that. His first album, At the Corner, was a national hit and would be the first of many successes in Robin's career, such as the launch of his own label, Free Lunch in 1999.
So how does a successful singer/songwriter keep the songs coming?
"My songwriting process is kind of like walking through a junkyard and picking up pieces until I find a song," he explains. "It usually all begins with my guitar, though.
Once I've found a certain sound, it generally all comes together from there."
Robin says that these days he enjoys making music a lot more because he is more relaxed.
"When you get older, and things start to sag a bit, you worry less about the little things and start to enjoy it more," he muses.
In between making records, trips to the UK where he is working hard at breaking through and playing loving husband and father to his family including a brand new baby in Muizenberg, Robin has found the time to put together his latest show, which promises to be a night of humour and great music.
Accompanied by Barry van Zyl and Schalk Joubert, Robin will share some of his best songs from the past years.
"The band is really fantastic and we have given a fresh twist to some of my older songs, so it's not going to be some cheesy tribute show," says Robin.
Apart from being the regular drummer for Johnny Clegg, Barry has also played with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Peter Gabriel and Mick Hucknall, while Schalk, a new addition to the band, has toured with many of SA's top musicians.
Only in it for the Money - A Songwriter's Tale also takes a look at some amusing stories from Robin's life, like how Donna Summer scarred him for life, what it is like to follow Patricia Lewis on stage in Bloemfontein and how he paid back Rod Stewart for playing Sun City.
And what about Robin's future? Well, his daughter has a keen interest in the piano, so maybe a father-daughter duet? Or perhaps he will turn to his other passion - surfing.
"I always say that if my career in music doesn't pan out I can always fall back on my surfing, or maybe even my poetry - so basically I?d be finished," he laughs.
Well thankfully it seems that his fans aren't ready to let him turn into a surf bum just yet.
