It's not every day that a legend walks into your life, let alone into your classroom.
Yet that's exactly what happened to local songbird Tarryn Lamb recently when she was handpicked, as one of only eight people, to perform in David Kramer's much anticipated production, The Kramer Petersen Songbook.
The show, which honours the longstanding friendship between David and the late Taliep Petersen and the legacy left behind in his music, will open in early December at the Baxter Theatre.
Tarryn, a former Ocean View and Fish Hoek Senior High School pupil, is soon to complete her studies at the Waterfront Theatre School, and was shocked and elated when Kramer, in his trademark hat and veldskoens, arrived at the college to hear her sing.
Tarryn's friend Marc Lottering had recommended her to David after hearing about the idea for the show.
"I was nervous and excited," says Tarryn. "He just showed up and asked to hear me sing.
"He then gave me some constructive criticism and I thought that was that."
A few weeks later David turned up by surprise again, this time at a show that Tarryn was doing at Baran's Theatre.
"He came up to me afterwards and handed me some sheet music and asked me to learn the words," she continues. "Three days later he came to the college again to hear me sing the song, and when I was finished he said that he loved what he had heard and offered me the part.
"I feel so privileged and excited at the idea of working on such a wonderful and important production.
"I am nearly finished with my studies and have been worried about the idea of not being able to find work, and then this happened. I thank the Lord for this honour."
The Kramer Petersen Songbook opens on Friday, 7 December at the Baxter Theatre and no doubt will be a sell-out, full of great memories, and certainly new talent.
