BY the flick of a coin or two and the push of a number, the classic jukebox would come to life and belt out your favourite tune, bringing life to any party.
Well, the same can be said for Gary Naidoo and the cast of Jukebox, now on at Baran's Theatre in Cape Town.
A series of lights flash around the stage landing on a different colour each time, and the audience gets to pick from a list of tracks, ranging from Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive to Queen's Crazy Little Thing Called Love.
The songs are then sung by one or more of the performers, backed by a highly talented backing band who, in the moody lighting and Mediterranean backdrop, are somewhat reminiscent of an old Cuban-style Mariachi band.
But be assured, this is no karaoke show as each song is performed in the artist's own unique style.
It must be said though, that as talented as the rest of the line up may be, host and performer Gary Naidoo almost completely steals the show.
With a mix of comic timing, vocal styling and what can only be described as stage charisma, Gary interacts with and engages his audience from the moment he steps foot on stage.
Well-known for his roles in shows like Ghoema, Broekies and Plaatjies and Let's Mix It, Gary is clearly right where he belongs... in the spotlight!
With the audience choosing what they want to hear, no two nights of the show are the same, but with the musical talent making up the cast of Jukebox, and Gary leading the way, the one thing that is guaranteed to be constant, is the volume of sheer entertainment.
Don't miss your chance to take a spin at the Jukebox, running at Baran's until 10 November, Tuesday through Saturday, at 20:30 nightly.
Tickets cost R170 including a three course Mediterranean buffet. For more information or to book phone (021) 426-4466 or visit www.barans.co.za.
