THEY are vibrant, funky, and have stolen the hearts of thousands of South Africans, making them one of the country's biggest selling bands.
They are Freshlyground!
With hits like the ultra-catchy Doo Be Doo, the single I?d like and the latest favourite Pot Belly, it is very unlikely you haven't heard of this world-class act ? unless you have been hiding under a rock, that is!
The band is made up of a group of young and energetic musicians, each bringing their own flavour and talent to into the mix to create something truly unique.
People?s Post approached Freshlyground's feisty lead vocalist, Zolani Mahola, or Zo as she is fondly known, to find out about what makes her tick!
1. Where did the name Freshlyground originate?
A member of the audience suggested it at one of our concerts in the very early days of the band.
2.Years back, before Freshlyground, if someone told you a song named Doo Be Doo would be your claim to fame, what would you have said?
I don't think anyone would have predicted the success of the song!
3. You guys always look like you are full of energy and having the time of your life. Are you really? And can you share your secret so the rest of us can benefit from it too?
We have a lot of fun most of the time. We try to see every concert as a unique opportunity to introduce our music to new people.
But some concerts are more work than others.
4. Are you all as close off-stage as on? Do you hang out together all the time or do you get sick of each other and need a break?
No, we are very close off-stage too. Peter and Josh are best friends and go on family holidays together. Julio and Simon even live in the same house. We do many many things together.
5. Do you sing your own songs in the shower?
You'll be surprised! It does happen to us too: Doo Be Doo stuck in my head after a concert!
6. People sometimes queue for ages to get into your shows. Who would you stand in a queue for to see live?
Wow, many, many artists. I would queue for a month to see Stevie Wonder.
7. What has been the biggest change in your life since the band's fame?
Well, I get to see the world, as we travel all the time. I have met some amazing people and listened to beautiful music.
8. You seem like a very open-minded, free-spirited, happy individual. What, if anything, ticks you off?
Not many things tick me off... A bad meal at a restaurant... A bad book...
9. If there were only one message you could send out with your music, what would it be?
Most of our songs are about loving yourself and others.
10. If you were a cartoon character, who would you be and why?
Spongebob Square Pants! He is so cool.
11. If you only had R50 to your name for the month, how and on what would you spend it?
I would put it in my savings account ? never too late to start saving!
12. In the song Pot Belly, it comes across as though you are comfortable with yourself and your self-image. Have you always been that way?
No I haven't. I was very, very shy as a teenager and have come a long way to finding beauty in my imperfections. I truly believe everyone is beautiful.
13. What advice would you give to young women/girls who have low self-esteem?
Love yourself. The sooner you come into terms with your physical self the happier you will be.
14. What colour best sums you up and why?
Bright colours: orange, red, yellow. Because that is what our music is bright and feel good.
