Will you be my (Shirley) Valentine?
    Ilde Fenthum

"SEX is like Sainsbury's: overrated. It's a whole lot of pushing and shoving and you still come out with very little in the end."

Thus quipped the delectable Shirley Valentine in the show of the same name, running at the Kalk Bay Theatre until 17 February.

Shirley, played by the most capable Anthea Thompson, is a middle-aged Liverpudlian woman, frustrated with the hum-drum of everyday life, and spends her day talking to her ever-present companion, Wall. She takes the plunge and travels to Greece, where she discovers the answer to life, love and everything after.

I was sceptical about a movie with a full cast done as a one-woman-show, but I was pleasantly surprised. This version of Shirley Valentine was well-written and never does one feel it needs more than one actor.

Thompson manages to engage the audience, making them feel like confidantes in Shirley's personal life. Her English accent is impeccable and maintained throughout the play and she really taps into small-town English life, taking one directly into the kitchen as she prepares egg and chips for her husband's tea.

I would recommend this to anyone feeling like they need to take their own holiday in Greece to discover the deeper meaning of their own life. Absolutely brilliant; well done!

. Shirley Valentine runs at the Kalk Bay Theatre until 17 February on Wednesday to Sundays. Doors open at 18:45 (should you wish to dine) and the show starts at 20:30. Tickets cost R100. Phone Simon on 082 658 200.
