From murder mystery to musical masterpiece
    Nina Harvey

So how does one go from fictional murder victim to recording artist? Sound impossible? Not if you know the story of Andre Smit.

Last year People's Post reported aspiring singer Andre, a local Fish Hoek resident, was spotted by a representative from the David Gresham Record Company.

Andre signed with David Gresham, who called him personally to give him the great news, and has since released his debut, self-titled album.

But the story behind the story is that the Gresham representative, Sharon Jones ? who also happens to be a local ? was enjoying an evening out with her friends at a Murder Mystery Evening, organised by the late Fran Freeman in support of the Penguin Festival.

Fran, as she was known to do, roped in a number of friends to help her put up this event. This list of friends included Andre, who was convinced to play the role of the unfortunate murder victim.

Before his "demise", Andre was asked to perform one or two songs.

"The moment he started singing, I was totally blown away. He had such a phenomenal voice," says Sharon. "I don't normally make a habit of approaching strangers to ask them for a demo ? least of all when I am out with my friends ? but I was just so impressed by André."

Sharon took the demo straight to Gresham, who was equally impressed by the young singer's talent.

And the rest, to use a cliche, is history! Andre is now the first Afrikaans singer to sign with Gresham.

His debut album features 13 tracks, written by the likes of Ruan de Jager and Amanda Luyt, and includes brand new hit singles such as My Hart Bly Altyd Joune and Sal Jy Verstaan.

"I am really excited about the album," says Andre. "We are planning a lot at the moment, including an official launch party, and I just can't wait to get out there and start promoting."

According to Sharon, Gresham has a number of things in the pipeline for Andre, including a number of possible television slots as well as radio airplay. In fact, you may have already heard one of his songs on Radio Sonder Grense (RSG).

"I really want to thank everyone who have and continues to support my music ? and also those who will hopefully start to support it now."

Andre can be seen performing live at the Goodhope Centre on 9 February, at Cafe Pescado in Simon's Town on Valentine's Day (14 February) and at the V&A Waterfront Ampitheatre on 24 February.
