Last year People's Post "warned" readers if they had not yet heard of Tucan Tucan, they soon would.
And it seems all predictions were correct.
Local "Afro-Tropical" band, Tucan Tucan, has shared the stage with some top international acts at events like the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and the Standard Bank Jazz Festival in Grahamstown, as well as headlining a number of sold out gigs at local venues such as Kirstenbosch Gardens.
Songs like Slow Jam and Hold on have had extensive air-play on a number of local radio stations and this colourful collective has also been known to appear on television stations like Channel O, SABC channels and MTV base.
But Tucan Tucan's most recent achievement comes in the form of a place in the finals in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) in the World Music category for its song Esa Morena.
Esa Morena is sung in Spanish by Muriel Marco and Frank Paco and combines elements of Kwasa Kwasa and Latin.
"The song tells the story of a beautiful, brunette woman," says Muriel. "A beautiful, Latin woman who has taken my man away from me."
But don?t expect a woeful ballad of self-pity. This song will have you jumping to your feet and searching the dance floor for the nearest available partner ? preferably resembling Antonio or Salma ? to dance the Salsa.
And it would seem the rhythm has already found its way into the judging panel's feet as Tucan Tucan beat out some 15 000 entrants from all over the world to take its place in the finals.
"There are two parts to the competition," explains Muriel. "In one part the song is judged by a judging panel, the results of which will be announced in April. And then there is the People?s Voice award, which is decided by the people and will be announced in March."
The People's Voice award is totally separate to the judges? award. The song that receives the most public votes will win a number of exciting prizes as well as bragging rights as the People?s Voice 2007 winner.
"We are all still, after years together, really enjoying the music," says Muriel. "It has been hard work at times, but finally we are feeling the work is paying off and our dreams are becoming real."
Tucan Tucan needs your support to help the band win the People's Voice award, and all it takes is just a couple of clicks.
Log on to www.tucan-tucan.com and listen to Esa Morena. If you like what you hear, follow the links to the ISC page and cast your vote. Voting closes on Friday, 29 February.
While on their site, be sure to also check out MMOP ? Music MindSet Outreach Project ? a project created by the band aimed at sharing their knowledge and encouraging young musicians to seek music tuition to enable them to read and write music.
The project involves a number of workshops and performances and Tucan Tucan would like to encourage any schools interested to check it out and contact them either via the website or on (021) 705-2160 or by e-mailing info@tucan-tucan.com.
Let Tucan Tucan do what it does best by bringing the rhythm of the music into your life!
