    Love at the Roxy
    Nina Harvey

THEATRE audiences aren't often inspired to bust out of their seats and dance the night away, but with the fantastic song selection and equally fantastic performances by the cast of "Under the Influence of Love", that's exactly what happened.

Sitting through the first half of the show in the middle of GrandWest's Roxy Revue Bar, everyone was clearly enjoying the music, tapping their feet, clapping their hands and nodding their heads, but by the time the second half arrived, this journalist and a few others decided we couldn't take it any more.

The result: two People's Post journalists, an eTV reporter, a small crowd of party people and one of the shows spirited directors dancing and jamming at the back of the theatre.

The theme of the show is that elusive thing we call love, and the cast - headed up by the phenomenal one-man walking entertainment show, Gary Naidoo ? explores this theme from all angles, from loyalty: "Nothing you can say could tear me away from my guy..."; to lust: "Roxanne, you don't have to put on your red light...?; to good old fashioned love at first sight: "The first time ever I saw your face..."

The directing duo of Rafiek Mammon and Gary Naidoo, well known for their work on "Let's Mix It" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", have again combined their talents to come up with yet another hit show.

Riyaan Cornelius? vocal performance of The Police's "Roxanne" was simply spectacular. He not only did it justice, but gave it some real oomph ? an absolute necessity when singing anything by Sting.

Every so often at these shows, if you are lucky, you get a glimpse into a musical genius in the making. Saxophonist Byron Abrahams was it for this show.

A third year music student at UCT College of Music, Byron had the audience cheering with excitement every time he stepped out for a solo performance. A John Coltrane in the making?

The show is funny, energetic, relaxed and full of soul and a whole lot of rhythm, most of which emanates from Gary's gyrating hips. Man can that boy dance!

    If it's a party you want, it's a party you'll get.

"Under the Influence of Love" runs until Saturday 19 July at GrandWest's Roxy Revue Bar, Wednesdays to Saturdays. Tickets cost R67 and are available from Computicket. Doors open at 20:00, show starts at 20:30.
