    Masters of the mountain
    Jason Acar

THE MISSION of moving between Hout Bay and Fish Hoek by foot was a necessity for local fisherman in the past.

Making it to Hout Bay to Fish Hoek or vice versa was a gruelling journey, especially with a load on your shoulders and shaking legs from a hard day's work. Despite this being a thing of the past, around 250 people streamed over the mountain hoping to set a new record for the historic trek in the 2008 Fisherman's Trail Challenge.

Last year, the race started at the Hout Bay Yacht Club and finished at the Fish Hoek Beach Sailing club. Each year, the race route is reversed and the finish was in Hout Bay for the 2008 race. The 2007 winners, Warren Petterson and Michelle Lombardi, lined up with the group, fit and ready to defend their title.

Petterson?s intentions were clear from the get go as he stormed into the mountains. Despite falling after the Silvermine River Walk, the veteran runner burned through the course like a runaway fire and crossed the finish in 1:43:16, breaking the route record set by William Ruijsch van Dugteren in the 2006 race by ten minutes.

Scarre Celliers finished in second place, in a time of 1:51:16, with Andrew Tunstall taking third place in 1:53:02.

Lombardi was put to the test in the race this year, as Oranjezicht runner Jeannie Bomford snapped at her ankles through the entire route.

Lombardi broke away as she came onto Hout Bay Beach, sprinting with every last bit of energy she had left. She stumbled over the line to take victory in 2:01:18. Bomford came in just over a minute later to finish second with a time of 2:02:31.

Olivia Read took third place in a time of 2:04:35.
