FISH HOEK POLICE were quick to pounce on three suspects involved in an armed robbery at a building site in Noordhoek on Friday.
The robbers chose the building contractor's early morning tea break to make their move. The company is working on Longbeach Resort and had the week?s wages on site.
Two men armed with guns jumped over the wall at about 10:20 and ordered staff members of the company to lie on the ground. A shot went off, but no-one was injured. The robbers took almost R25 000, a ring and a cellphone and then hot-footed it over the wall again.
The staff members chased after the robbers and saw them get into a taxi at the Longbeach Mall rank that a third member of their group had commandeered for their getaway.
The police were dispatched and received information on where one of the suspects lived. Within 45 minutes of the robbery having taken place, the first suspect was arrested in Masiphumelele. He had some of the stolen money on him and his gun was also seized. A second suspect was tracked down and arrested at Fish Hoek Station. He was returning by train from a shopping trip up the line. The third suspect was arrested in Masiphumelele that evening.
One of the suspects is a former employee of the company.
The Fish Hoek Police managed to recover both weapons purportedly used in the robbery, as well as several thousand rand. One of the recovered guns was reported stolen in Fish Hoek earlier this year.
Police members involved in pulling off the speedy arrests were Captain Riaan Bester, Inspector Peter Middleton, Constable Thandisile Mgwangqa, Inspector Ralton Fouché and Inspector Hein Smith.
Pam Louw, a colleague of the building contractors, expressed her gratitude to the police for their good work.
"I am very impressed with how fast the police reacted and arrested the suspects. They are a shining example of what the police service can do," she says.
