THE house of the policeman who was arrested last year for allegedly dealing in tik was searched on Saturday night after a suspect was caught leaving the premises in possession of tik.
In December last year, 38-year-old Reginald Da?niels, a police officer who lives in Grassy Park but is stationed at Hout Bay SAPS, was arrested along with his 26-year-old wife, an 18-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man for allegedly dealing in tik.
The police raided Daniels' house on Saturday, 2 December.
All the suspects are currently out on bail and will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court in connection with the December arrest on 19 April.
This past Saturday, 10 February, the police again searched the home of Daniels after his brother-in-law, George van Wyk, was arres?ted for being in possession of tik.
The Grassy Park Police were in the vicinity of Daniels' house on Saturday night when they noticed a suspicious-looking vehicle parked outside the house.
"A man came out of the house and walked in the direction of the vehicle," says Senior Superintendent Christopher Jones, station commissioner of the Grassy Park Police Station.
"One of our police officers, Captain Isaac Hannekom, apprehended him in an attempt to search him."
But, Jones says, the man resisted arrest. Jones says he was found to be in possession of tik.
After a long struggle, a woman came out of the house and allegedly attempted to interfere with the arrest of the man.
She was arrested for obstructing the course of justice. But the charges were dropped and she was released on Sunday.
Eventually the police entered Daniels' home. However, they did not have a search warrant.
"We went in without a warrant because we had sufficient grounds. The man who resisted arrest came out of the house and was in possession of tik," Jones counters.
No drugs were found on the premises.
Daniels is currently suspended from duty until the outcome of an internal police investigation has been finalised, says provincial SAPS spokesperson, Inspector Bernadine Steyn.
While the internal investigation is under way, she says that she is not at liberty to divulge any further information.
George van Wyk appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge of possession of drugs. The outcome of the appearance could not be confirmed by the police at the time of going to press.
Jones says that although the police cannot be everywhere, they are trying their best to make Grassy Park a safer environment for the community at large.
"We are listening to the community. If we were not, crime would not have decreased by 11% since August last year," he maintains.
He says that the police will not stop wor?king hard to rid the area of crime until the criminals stop committing the crimes.
. Other arrests made by the Grassy Park Police over the past week include 12 for fai?lure to comply with the requests of a peace officer, 11 for possession of narcotics and one for malicious damage to property.
Seven people were arrested for theft, two for housebreaking, two for drunken driving, one for domestic violence.
There were two arrests for possession of suspected stolen property, one for theft out of a motor vehicle, eight for shoplifting, eight for being drunk in public and three for possession a dangerous weapon.
