TWO POLICE officers from Ocean View Police Station were arrested on corruption and robbery charges on Wednesday 25 June.
The two officers appeared in the Simon's Town Magistrate's Court on Monday. John Campher, the prosecutor dealing with the case, said the proceeding was merely in pre?paration for the trial, which has been set for 5 August.
Campher said the two officers have been released from custody with an official warning. No bail application was made. Says Campher, "It was a discretionary matter ? they are not flight risks. No bail was suggested."
The two officers are Constable Wayne Scheepers and Reservist Constable Roland Pick.
Scheepers has been a permanent member of the police force for the past four years. Pick has been a reservist for the past nine years.
Both were originally scheduled to appear in court on Friday, but Pick apparently fell ill while being detained in a hol?ding cell at the Fish Hoek police station. He was then transferred to False Bay Hospital, where he was kept under police watch until his appea?rance.
The officers were arrested following allegations made by a suspect arrested on a housbreaking charge in a crime prevention operation that took place in Masiphumelele on Sa?turday 21 June.
The suspect who was arrested alleges that a monetary bribe was solicited from him for his release.
Provincial Police spokesperson, Superintendent Billy Jones, says the payment was allegedly made at the suspect's house.
The man was released and returned the next day to make a statement at the Ocean View Police Station.
Ocean View police station commander, Superintendent Jayce Naidoo, said the investigation into the complainant's housebreaking charge was still ongoing.
Naidoo, who took over running the station at the end of May following the death of Superintendent Sherwin Abrahams, was insis?tent that anyone found guilty of corruption would be brought to light.
"My management team has a zero tole?rance approach to any form of corruption.
"We are not going to hide anything and sweep it away.
We have to clean up from inside if we are going to be effective on the outside," Superintendent Naidoo said.
