The situation at Hillstar testing station, Ottery has to be addressed immediately.
I live in Glencairn and previously testing for learner's and driver's licences were done in Fish Hoek. This centre was closed and all testing is now being done at Hillstar. This facility can clearly not cope with the volume.
It is totally unacceptable to have to wait in excess of six months for a retest.
My daughter obtained her learner's licence on 14 May 2004. However she was not permitted to book for her drivers licence until she had actually turned 18 on the 10 March 2005. At that point the earliest date we could get for her driver's test was 5 July 2005. She failed her test and was unable to rebook as no dates are available before her learner's expires on 13 November 2005. The earliest booking is 21 December 2005 .
This is totally unacceptable. Her driving instructor informed me to telephone every day in the hope of getting a cancellation. I was informed that it was a waste of time phoning as preference would be given to those whose learner's would expire before my daughter's. I called again later and was told to phone every day as "I might just get lucky."
Does nobody take into consideration the time and expense involved in having to traipse back and forth and in some instances from one testing station to another to try and get a suitable appointment. Not to mention the cost of having to telephone daily as well as the cost of the driving instructor who has to accompany her each time.
