The letter "Dog owners note" (People's Post, 5 July) refers.
My heart goes out to Rob and Marie Gray of Noordhoek. It is bad enough to lose a beloved pet through illness or natural causes, but to have to deal with the trauma of a pet being savagely killed on its owners' property is quite dreadful.
In Kommetjie, we have experienced the same problems over many years with uncontrolled dogs whose owners refuse to abide by the rules and walk their dogs on a leash in public areas. In the March newsletter circulated by the KRRA (Kommetjie Residents' and Ratepayers' Association), there is a photograph of a dog threatening a seal on our beach and the same animal was reportedly involved in an incident with an otter, "with the complicity of its owners"!
Uncontrolled dogs often invade our garden, sometimes in pursuit of neighbourhood cars, putting our own elderly pets at risk. Confront the owners and they either become verbally abusive or unable to comprehend why one should object to their pets being out of control.
One can report these offenders to the local Law Enforcement office in Fish Hoek. Put your complaint in writing, give times and dates, and request a reference number from the officer on duty. Names of complainants are not revealed to the offenders but one is entitled to know the outcome of follow-up procedures.
Once a dog has behaved in this manner, it will almost certainly attack again, and by taking action, you may save other pet owners the heartache described by the Grays.
