IF you are shopping at the Longbeach Mall this weekend, you may be stopped by a smiling young person and asked to give your valuable opinions about culture in our valley.
The exercise is linked to the Emzantsi Carnival, which will take place in the valley on 3 December, and forms part of a ground-breaking research project funded by the national Department of Arts and Culture and led by Claire Kelly of the International and Diversity Studies Unit of Southern Africa at the University of Cape Town.
The Department of Arts and Culture is hoping to demonstrate that an arts event such as the Emzantsi Carnival can enhance cross-cultural understanding. Also, it hopes to use the valley's experience as a template for other communities across South Africa to follow.
If you would like to see a copy of the questionnaire, are interested in giving your opinion, would like to take part in the Emzantsi Carnival, or would like to nominate an Emzantsi Carnival King or Queen, phone one of the coordinators - Sam Pearce (Sun Valley/Fish Hoek, 789-1665), Alvin Castro (Ocean View, 084 293 5692) or Rodney Ndyalvan (Masiphumelele, 073 240 1898).
Sam Pearce thanks the Longbeach Mall for granting permission for the survey to be done there.
