    Life's a Beach - 6 January
    PAUL BOTHA

THE waves continue to pulse onto the beaches, reefs and point breaks of the South Peninsula leading many of the area's long term surfers to call this the best summer for surf in recent memory.

Although the Cape Doctor makes conditions in False Bay unpleasant for the Learn to Surf brigade at times, the 19 'riders' on the inaugural Ticket to Ride gap year surfing adventure enjoyed their two week stay in Kommetjie with the bulk of the crew progressing to riding small conditions in the Atlantic beach breaks.

The group also did some sterling charity work in the valley and managed to fit in visits to many of the local attractions, both natural and social.

The first national surfing event of the year, the Billabong 'Girls get Out There' Surf Series, ran at Tableview last weekend and local surfers produced many of the best performances.

Tanika Hoffman recorded the highest scores of all the divisions on Saturday an went on to claim the runner-up berth in the u/15 division where Sabrina Scott (Glencairn) continued her climb to national stardom, qualifying for her first final at this level and also awarded the Most Improved Local Surfer accolade.

Kommetjie's Tarryn Chudleigh, who competed with a sprained wrist incurred when she fell off her bicycle while MXITing, was eliminated in the quarter-finals of both the Open and Pro Junior (u/20) divisions but still went on claim second place overall in the Open and third in the u/20 in the 2006/7 got series ratings.

Damien Fahrenfort, who is still adamant that Kommetjie is his home despite having spent two years in Durban when he?s not campaigning on the ASP World Tour, was SA's joint top performer in a 6 Star rated, R900 000 event in Brazil on Saturday.

The 20 year-old full-time pro surfer progressed through three rounds to place equal 25th, pocketing R8 500 and 875 invaluable ratings points in the process.

The Surfing South Africa surf coaching program swings into top gear again this coming weekend when the first Level One Surf Instructors course of 2007 will be staged in Kommetjie.

Featuring seven candidates from as far afield as Amanzimtoti, Plett and George, as well as locals Chris Molde (Muizenberg), Jessica Lee (Noordhoek) and high performance expert and WP team coach Quintin Jones, the three day course will be conducted by Dene Botha at the Kahuna Surfing Academy.

And further proof that Deep South surfers are a hardy breed came when a long haired fellow sporting an ancient Banzai wetsuit, zip up booties with car-tire soles and clutching a long forgotten Dynamite logo?d PSP longboard was spotted going for a moonlight surf at Fish Hoek beach at 10.15 pm last Thursday evening.

Warnings that it may be dangerous elicited nothing more than a waved 'shaka' sign as this intrepid warrior strolled off down the beach past the empty Shark Spotters flagpole and was last seen disappearing into the darkness while paddling out to sloppy, windblown, half metre waves. Only a surfer knows the fee?ling!
