THE Red Bull Big Wave Africa surfing event is in full swing with the highly focused group of invited local and international big wave chargers waiting for Dungeons, the open ocean reef under the cliffs of the Sentinel at Hout Bay, to produce the goods in the form of five metre or bigger waves for the seventh successive year.
Just five days remain in the three week waiting period, and prospects of crowning just the third Red Bull BWA champion since 1999 still look good as forecasts show huge swells battering the west coast of the Peninsula from Tuesday to Thursday and another swell expected on Sunday.
The participants have been enjoying excellent surf all over the Peninsula, but conditions have only allowed for one session at Dungeons so far. That was last Wednesday when 10 of the crew went out in wild, windblown, rainy conditions. Several waves of over 15 foot were ridden and history was made when Kim Hamrock, the California based surf instructor, became the first woman to not only paddle into the intimidating Dungeons lineup, but also to catch and ride a triple overhead sized wave.
Elsewhere, Kommetjie's Dave Richards continued his assault on the country's Pro Junior ratings when he was placed fourth in u/20 final of the O'Neill SA Open in gnarly two to 2,5 metre waves at Nahoon Reef in East London last weekend. The 18-year-old full time professional surfer was the only Capetonian to reach a final and moved up one position on the Pro Surf Tour (PST) rankings to fourth.
Klee Strachan from Sun Valley has been appointed the vice-captain and top seed in the u/16 division of the SA national surf team that will compete in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Games in California in October.
Strachan, 15-year-old Tarryn Chudleigh (Kommetjie) and Brandon Roberts (Sun Valley) attended a training camp in PE last week where their fitness was assessed at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Surfing South Africa's (SSA) centre of specialisation. The SA junior team will be coached by Kommetjie's Howard Gold, director of coaching for SSA.
