KOMMETJIE'S Damien Fahrenfort continued the list of surfers from the Far South making their mark on the world rankings by causing the major upset of the R1,8 million Billabong Pro in Jeffreys Bay last week.
The 18-year-old eliminated 2001 world champion and the event's fourth seed, C.J. Hobgood from Florida, USA, in the second round of the country's most prestigious surf tournament. He now comes up against six-time world champ Kelly Slater (USA) in round three, in a rematch of their first round encounter, where Fahrenfort was soundly beaten.
Now a full-time professional surfer campaigning on the ASP World Tour and living in Durban, Fahrenfort is quick to assert that he is proud to be a product of Kommetjie and is looking forward to having another crack at surfing's greatest ever competitor.
"I grew up in Kommetjie and spent the first 18 years of my life there," he said while waiting for the contest to resume in Jeffreys Bay, adding, "I'll always be proud to represent Cape Town while I?m traveling on the tour, but it's more convenient to live in Durban for contests and travelling".
Meanwhile, the Cape Peninsula's junior girls are looking forward to the second leg of the Roxy Surf Jam scheduled to take place at Muizenberg on Saturday and Sunday.
Designed to attract newcomers to contest surfing as well as provide experience for regular competitors, this national event offers a total of R8 000 in prize-money to the top four finishers in the u/14, u/16, u/18 and Pro Junior (u/20) divisions. It has attracted more than 50 local and national entries along with Lindsay Noyes, a top Australian junior.
SA surf team member Tarryn Chudleigh, who will compete in both the u/16 and Pro Junior categories, heads a local contingent that includes fellow Kommetjie surfer Sarah Nicholson, Caitlin Morris and Anna Notten from St James, Sun Valley's Hannah Bing and Sasha Veldhuis, Shana Sivewright (Noordhoek) and Sandra Olmesdahl (Marina Da Gama).
The locals will be up against rookies and seasoned campaigners from all over the Peninsula, along with established stars from Victoria Bay, Port Elizabeth and Durban. Let's hope the locals rule!
