The sporting life By Chippy Wood - 19 July
    Chippy Wood

THE results of the Fish Hoek Hockey Club are way off their best for many years.

All clubs suffer ups and downs. We know and appreciate that these situations are cyclical. Maybe in trying to be wise and looking for reasons for the present situation, we could say that the poor results reflect the slow decline in the club itself that started with the move from the clay pitches to the grass at Silverglade. The advent of astro turf was the final straw that removed senior hockey competition away from the Valley.

Old timers will recall the large crowds that gathered over the clay pitches on Saturday afternoons to watch the highly acclaimed local side in action. Nowadays, we hardly know any member of the Grand Challenge team as they must perform only on the astro turfs further afield.

The present generation carries an unnecessary burden. The club's proud boast is: Founded in 1921, South African Club Champions in 1975 and never been relegated. Maybe if the 1st team is relegated then the club can discard that bogeyman once and for all - and start afresh.

The world we live in today has absolutely nothing to do with the lifestyles and preoccupations of 1921, 1975 or even 1995. "Today" is a world of a multiplicity of choices in which the priorities of yesteryear have no bearing, especially on whether or not, "? our team has been relegated to Town Challenge". They will return in due course.

There are two good signs for the future. One is the fine club spirit that has been the prevailing tradition of the club. The other concerns the city's radical reassessment of sporting facilities and their deployment.

We are not dealing with a minor cash-strapped municipality any more. The goal of an astro turf pitch for all the people of the Far South is not unattainable.
