The country's top pro surfers took to the powerful waves of the Far South when the O'Neill Coldwater Classic began in booming surfboard- and leash-snapping two to three metre surf at 365's in Soetwater on Saturday and concluded in pristine two to 2,4 metre surf at the Outer Kom on Sunday.
Most of the local big wave fraternity spurned the opportunity to capitalise on their local knowledge by not entering the Pro Surf Tour (PST) event. Kommetjie's Daniel Beatty was the best home grown finisher, reaching the final, where he was placed fourth. Encouraging performances came from 13-year-old Matthew Bromley, who reached the last 32, fellow Kommetjie resident Dagan Gold (quarter-finals) and former event winner Brandon Roberts (Sun Valley), who was ousted in the semis.
An exciting initiative to develop the Peninsula's future surf champions, the three-event Kahuna Surf Series for u/10, u/12, u/14 and u/16 boys and girls, will get under way in the gentle rollers of Muizenberg on the weekend of 13 and 14 August. Created by the Kommetjie-based Kahuna Surfing Academy, the KSS is aimed at fostering competition surfing in the Western Cape.
Run by Western Province Surfing and excluding surfers who have reached the final of any national age group event, the KSS gives novices the chance to experience the thrill of winning. Every competitor receives a "goodies bag" packed with surf industry and mainstream youth brand products.
Entry forms for the KSS will be available before the weekend from surf schools, surf shops and WP Surfing, or get them from www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za. Kahuna Surfing Academy will sponsor the entry fees of 10 surfers from disadvantaged communities in each of the three events.
Tarryn Chudleigh (15) from Kommetjie was in great form at the Roxy Surf Jam event for junior girls, winning the prestige Pro Junior (u/20) division and placing second in the u/16 final in one to 1,5 metre (3-5 foot) surf at Long Beach in Kommetjie last weekend. Holly Armstrong (Kommetjie) placed third in the u/14's and fourth in the u/18?s, while rising star Sandra Olmesdahl (Marina Da Gama) qualified for the u/16 final, finishing fourth.
James Woods, another member of the teenage crew from Kommetjie, is the latest Far South surfer chosen to represent South African at international level. The 14-year-old left for France on the weekend for the Quiksilver "King of the Groms" event featuring the top U16 surfers worldwide.
