The outcome of today's Grand Challenge hockey match between Fish Hoek and WPCC B will decide if the Hoekers have moved out of the relegation danger zone or not.
This follows Fish Hoek's tense 3-2 defeat of UCT B on Saturday when, leading 3-2, they repelled a 10-minute siege on their goal area by determined students.
Wayne Denne opened the scoring when he seized on a missed short corner stop. UCT equalled from a short corner drag flick on half time.
UCT opened the scoring in the second half but, crowning an excellent performance all round, Devon Stanton scored from two drag flicks. The first in the middle of the second half and the second with about 12 minutes to go to full time.
In the last 10 minutes, Fish Hoek's defence played magnificently, holding out against four short corner scoring opportunities.
According to Fish Hoek's international Wayne Denne, the turnaround in the Hoekers' fortunes is due to a change in the training and how the players are reacting to it. "We've really put our hearts into it and it is making a difference," he said.
Denne said that no matter the outcome of today's game, the team would continue to focus more on performance than results as this is what is allowing them to win their games.
The play-offs for the four top teams and the four bottom teams started on Saturday and continues today. Thereafter there is yet another break in the league programme. This time for two weeks. The two final matches are compacted into a Wednesday and Saturday.
