    Fare ye well, Chippy Wood!


    THE PEOPLE'S POST this week bids a sad farewell to Chippy Wood, our top-class and dedicated sports journalist for the past year. Chippy has packed his shorts, fishing rod and a few good books to soak up the warm sunshine of Mozambique for an indefinite period.

    The contents of his Clovelly home are in storage and his Mercedes has a new owner as he settles down for some top-notch retirement years at Villanculos on the Mozambican coast, between Maputo and Beira, Mozambique's second capital.

    Why, oh why has he left? "I want to experience a different culture and way of life," he says. Also, "Basically I want to be warm all the time. I don't want to wait for a two-month summer to come along - I want to be in shorts all the time!"

    Chippy has travelled often to Mozambique - on both business and pleasure - and fell in love with the country through his journeys there.

    He will be staying in a four-bedroom holiday home in the Vila la Mar resort, which is within walking distance of the beach and which boasts a breathtaking view of the ocean. Paradise Island is a two-hour boat ride away.

    Granted, Chippy deserves all the sunshine and holiday thrills coming his way - he's led a productive enough life. Chippy was editor of five business journals under Thomson Newspapers, worked as a subeditor for Getaway, wrote for the Windhoek Advertiser, was financial reporter for the Cape Times, and was press and information manager for BP South Africa for ten years.

    And, of course, he was the inimitable sports reporter for The People's Post, delivering an invaluable contribution to both the newspaper and Far South community through his dedicated reporting on sports events.

    His "Sporting Life" column is beyond replacement or imitation. Only Chippy could do it with such style, wit and intelligence!

    Chippy will be sorely missed but we grant him his happiness.

    We have asked that he send us a "Sporting Life" from Mozambique now and then and look forward to sharing this with our readers.
