THE Fish Hoek Dolphins Baseball Club is back in False Bay. The club was accepted onto the Baseball Association Western Province (BAWP) committee as a fully fledged club on 25 July 2005.
In October 2004, an addicted and passionate baseball player, and member of the Fish Hoek Lions, Ricky Groome, convinced the Fish Hoek Lions to start baseball in the bay. With the help of an eager 11-year-old, who rounded up his friends from Sunvalley Primary School, the first baseball practice took place on a lonely Wednesday afternoon, when six youngsters arrived at the baseball field, eager, excited and willing to learn.
This number increased the Sunday following this practice to 14 and has steadily increased to 56 young players aged from 5 to 13.
At the same time, the Fish Hoek Lions undertook baseball in the bay as a project and have continued to support and encourage this development. Their support and the achievement of increasing the participation of the youth in this project won the Fish Hoek Lions a national Lions award.
Three teams have been entered into the provincial league, commencing October 2005, and the club has also been given the opportunity of entering additional teams if required. The BAWP has expressed its gratitude and excitement at the Dolphins joining the bigger picture of baseball and its development programmes.
The club would like to encourage all principals and sport administrators in False Bay to participate.
"In short, a school league amongst our local schools will be encouraged and developed," says Ricky Groome, chairperson of the club. "The club's field, equipment and coaches will be available to the participating schools, and this will be an automatic feeder into the Dolphins club and the provincial competition. Coaching clinics for both teachers, parents and any members of the community wishing to participate will be presented," he adds.
